Walking into Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s The Town That Dreaded Sundown, I expected a fairly straightforward remake of the Texarkana horror story, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s screenplay inserts us into a world where Charles B. Pierce’s original movie exists, repeatedly referencing the old-school horror flick through spliced-in clip insertions and actual character acknowledgement. It’s an extremely metaphysical movie that twists and turns in the name of horror, yet there’s also a recycled feel to it all that becomes a bit repetitive instead of sneakily ingenious. The 2014 version finds a way to become some hybrid sequel/remake slasher homage that tries to pay respect while traversing its own gory story, but the novelty of comparison becomes rather predictable as “The Phantom” hacks his way through a new batch of victims. It’s a fun and spirited watch, don’t get me wrong
The best way to describe how I approach Fantastic Fest is like summer camp. It happens once a year. You get back together with old friends. Yet in this case, this non-traditional camp is for fans of the most bizarre, violent, horrific, and Fantastic movies you could imagine. And even still, Fantastic Fest is so much more. This will be more third time attending Fantastic Fest and We Are Movie Geeks fourth time covering the crazy events that take place in Austin every September. For eight days I will be immersed in a world that is unlike any other film festival I have ever attended. What other festival is going to feature events like an opening night food fight, a karaoke party, a “nerd rap throwdown,” and the signature event at the festival – Fantastic Debates (which includes a verbal debate followed by a literal boxing match). These are just a
We've got a trailer for a new film with a great title called The Town that Dreaded Sundown. It's just one of those movie titles that perfectly roll off the tongue. The movie is a remake of a 1976 thriller that was based on a true story about a series of killings that afflicted a small town in the 1940s. The original film actually inspired one of the looks for Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th franchise. As a person that enjoys watching horror movies, this looks interesting to me, so I'll be checking it out. Of course, it's going to have some ridiculous moments, like the hotel room scene that you'll see in the trailer, but the ridiculousness is all part of what makes some horror movies fun to watch. Here's the synopsis
